A new design for the Kutchery Chowk conversion has been approved by the state’s development task force to accommodate the heaviest traffic volumes at the city’s major intersections, news sources reported.

The project is expected to be completed within a year without closing the main square. The new design follows the construction of the viaduct, which will help handle traffic from the Rawat side once construction of the Harian Expressway is complete. This highway will connect the Grand Trunk Road and the proposed Rawalpindi Ring Road. This easily reaches 131,500 vehicles per day. The previous design could only service up to 100,000 vehicles per day.

The cost of the project also rose from 4.879 billion to 6.422 billion, as the addition of the flyover increased the cost of construction materials by 25%.
