On Tuesday (September 13), Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi approved an emergency restoration plan for key infrastructure across the state, sources reported.
According to the approved plan, the government will fund the rehabilitation of all waterways, canals, reservoirs and associated roads. Roads are being rehabilitated as a priority to connect farmland to markets and keep goods moving to consumer markets. In addition, the meeting agreed to conduct a crop damage assessment to estimate the amount required for crop loss compensation.
At the same meeting, Elahi said the government was working on a plan to compensate families who lost their homes in the recent floods. The government will assess the damage and compensate the affected people through the Bank of Punjab (BoP) and partner banks for distribution of aid packages. Likewise, more material assistance in the form of food, medicines and essential items for affected people will be prioritized.
It’s worth noting that the country is grappling with what UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls “unnatural climate change.” So far, the government has estimated total material and agricultural damage at $10 billion, displacing 33 million people in four states.
