The federal government has designated PKR 2.2 billion in the budget for the Islamabad Development Package to enhance the infrastructure of rural areas.
The allocated funds for the Islamabad Development Package will primarily be used to develop rural union councils. The proposed projects include sanitation initiatives, road construction, pavement improvements, road rehabilitation, and water supply enhancements. The overall cost of the package is estimated at PKR 9.4 billion, with PKR 4,856 million already expended as of June 30.
In addition to the ongoing Islamabad Development Package, the government, in collaboration with the Capital Development Authority (CDA), plans to launch PKR 10 billion worth of rural development projects in Islamabad. The initial phase, valued at PKR 2.5 billion, is in progress, and tenders have been issued for the allocated works.
The Rawal Lake Water Treatment Project is another significant project outlined in the fiscal year 2023-24 budget. The construction of the Korang River and Rawal Lake Water Treatment Plant is estimated to cost PKR 6 billion. To prevent the inflow of contaminated water into Rawal Dam, the CDA intends to establish three sewage treatment plants in the catchment area. These plants will be in Lower Shahdara, Bari Imam, and Banigala. The project is expected to be completed within 14 months.
The federal government has also allocated PKR 29 million for feasibility studies on additional Metro Bus routes from Bhara Kahu to Faizabad and Faizabad to Rawat. Metro buses operate on temporary arrangements in regular traffic from Bhara Kahu to Pims and Koral to Pims.
However, the government plans to develop dedicated metro bus routes with separate corridors. The feasibility study for this project costs PKR 278 million, with the CDA receiving PKR 29 million.
Following the feasibility study, the CDA will construct metro bus corridors similar to the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Service.
Furthermore, the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) has allocated some of its funds to the 10th Avenue and Sihala overpass projects. The 10th Avenue project, valued at PKR 12 billion, received PKR 400 million, while the Sihala flyover project, estimated at PKR 9.5 billion, received PKR 405 million.
The allocation of these funds underscores the government’s commitment to improving the infrastructure and living standards in Islamabad, enhancing the overall development of the capital city.
